Searching: Following the Digital Footprint

Searching is a thriller film directed by Aneesh Chaganty set almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens. The film starts with a creating of profiles in Windows 95 of a small happy family of David Kim (John Cho), Michelle La (Pamela Nam Kim) and their daughter Margot (Alex Jayne Go) where movie progress with timelines of important events in their life. As story progress, Pamela dies from lymphoma after which David and Margot kind of become distant.

They are living their lives until one of the night Margot goes missing from a friend's house where she has gone to study. David is clueless as he never interacted and knows any of her friends and finally report her missing to the local cops. To uncover the mystery of her suddenly gone missing David logs into Margot computer and phone records to explore what exactly happened to her. Her digital footprint unravels lots of facts which was unknown to David and David tries to find her by connecting dots from whetaver he gathered from her computer and online activities. The movie takes you through David's perspective on how he relentlessly tries to find his daughter.

After a long time, I have seen a movie with such perfection. It's amazingly made movie in each its frame and keeps you on the edge with your mind running as fast as a David Kim in the movie. A unique thing which came out was the way movie is shot through the computer and smartphone screens was simply amazing. Whether it is acting, direction, story, editing ... this one is a perfect movie from all the aspects. It certainly shows that you do not need a high budget and the heavy star to make great movies. I will be very disappointed if this movie doesn't get shortlisted for Oscar.
Everyone must go for this one without a doubt !!

Madaari - [ Thriller / Drama ] - (3/5)

Madaari -

Madaari is thriller directed by Nishikant Kamat, it's a story about a grieving father Nirmal Kumar (Irrfan Khan) who lost his son in tragedy which is caused by negligence of government.

In terms of taking his revenge from system he kidnaps the son of home minister Prashant Goswami (Tushar Dalvi) and ask the Home Minister to use all his power to find out the tragedy in which Nirmal had lost his son and bring the culprit to justice in front of world.
Prashant hires Nachiket Verma (Jimmy Shergill) who is Jt. Director of CBI to use entire government machinery and catch Nirmal Kumar.

Nirmal being a smart and techie guy smartly plans the kidnaps and always on move which makes impossible for entire government machinery to nab him. He smartly makes his demand heard and also uses social media to spread the message why he is doing that and gets public sympathy.

The movie plays around on apathy a common indian goes through from our corrupt insensitive systems and shows what happens when same thing happens to powerful people like a home minister. It will give you kind of feeling of "Wednesday" kind of movie.

Nishikant Kamat has delivered good movies in past and try his best here however after a point movies looks very predictable and looses it's thriller flavor. Irrfan Khan has done superb performance and overall the movie is a decent watch.

Udta Punjab - [ Drama ] - (4/5)

Udta Punjab - Trippy and High

Udta Punjab is hindi/punjabi drama film directed by Abhishek Chaubey based on drug menace & drug abuse which is happening in the state of Punjab. The movie starts with packet of heroine flying from Pakistan to India border which is caught by nameless labouor from Bihar (Alia Bhatt) who works on farm field there and entire events unfolds how drug cartel works in Punjab which introduces several main characters of movie. It shows UK based pop artist Tommy (Shahid Kapoor) who is always on drugs and has big fan base especially youth who are inspired by him to be high. Its has Dr. Preet (Kareena Kapoor) who works tirelessly to help the youth and kids who are addicted to drugs and also works as a social worker to stop unauthorized sale of drug through pharmaceuticals shops. Diljit Doshan plays corrupt cops as Sartaj Singh who is okay to make cut from drug smuggling but get his conscience back when he sees his own brother addicted and nearly get a life from drug abuse. The movie explain the drug cartel over Punjab through these characters as well as politics of drug business in beautiful way.

Abhishek's way of presenting the story is terrific and keeps you interested however the movie lacks it's speed in certain parts. The movie already has a great star cast but its Alia Bhatt's great performance will win you over. I am so impressed by her portrayal as Bihari laborer and her flawless acting as a matured actor. She is simply suberb. Another great delight is to watch Diljit Doshan who steered his character with simplicity and Kareena is also absolutely perfect in her role. Shahid's offer variation and given another superb performance as Tommy however at certain point you will find him bit over board. Abhishek's direction and cinematography is excellent especially the way movie is summarised at the end.

It's a great movie and I am glad high court made it release without any cuts, you must watch it.

Captain America : Civil War - [ Action / Superhero ]

Captain America : Civil War - Avengers at conflicts

Captain America, Civil War is superhero movie, a third one on a series of Captain America timed at event post Avengers : Age of Ultron incident in Sokovia. The movie start back in 1991 in one of mission by Hydra operative brain washed soldier Bucky Barnes (Sabastian Stan) intercept a car carrying a case super soldier serum and kills it occupants. It comes back to current time where Avengers are trying to stop Crossbones (Super Soldier) from stealing chemical weapon at Lagos. When Crossbone trying to self destruct and kill Steve Rogers "Captain America" (Chris Evans) with explosives, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) diverts the explosives to next building killing 11 innocents people. The collateral damages done by The Aviators in past few incidents catches world's attention and US Secretory Of States decides to put Avengers under UN body which was approved by 117 nations. Steve and few of his supporters doesn't agree on this whereas Tony Stark (Robert Dawney Jr.), Natasha (Scarlett Johansson), Vision agrees to sign the pact to go under UN so that there will be proper control on Avengers.

The movie shows Sokovian Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) who plans attacks in UN convention at Vienna by killing king of Wakanda and implicate Barnes "Winter's Soldier" for same. Helmut also discovers codes to activate Barnes to do destruction and kill Avengers. Steve and Barnes confront each other and Steve finds the conspiracy to implicate Barnes and show Avengers in a bad light to world. He tries to convince Tony that its not Barnes who needs to be captured as according Barnes there is still a lab in Siberia which can activate more super soldiers to create more destruction in the world. Tony does't agree to this and asks Steve and his team to surrender and that's where Avengers gets divided in two teams and confronts each other. The movie is about Helmut's smart plan to make Avengers kill each other.

I never gone to any superhero movie with great expectations but this one surprised me with amazing story line and on top of that putting each characters in the situation of vulnerability. Somehow Marvel realised that movie is different from comic and it fed the viewer of great story apart from their just power. It's a very well made movie and I don't mid saying it is much bigger and better then The Avengers series. As usual Robert Dawney Jr. stands out and he was funny especially when he tries to recruit Peter Parker "Spider Man" (Tom Holland) in his team. It also introduced a new character Prince of Wakanda T'Challa "Black Panther" (Chadwisk Boseman) and yeah return of Ant Man (Paul Rudd) was awesome. The fight between Steve's and Tony's team was just amazing as you can't get that much of action between super heroes ever again especially with their powers as well as wits.

It was a great entertainment, must watch.

Spotlight - Not so Good Godmen

Spotlight is movie based out of true event happened in 2001 regarding investigative journalism of Boston's famous newspaper The Boston Globe about sexual abuse of children by priests which was overlooked by cardinal and churches. The Boston Globe hires a new editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber)  who discovers Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton) heads the "Spotlight" team, a small group of journalist whose articles are investigative in nature, but can take upto a year to publish. Baron points out a small column in paper about a pedophile priest John Geoghan and a lawyer who claims Cardinal Law (Arch Bishop of Boston) knew that Geoghan have been sexually abusing children but did nothing to stop him. Baron asks spotlight team to investigate it further. By connecting dots and joining broken pieces the team finds out it's not a matter of one priest abusing children but there are many such cases which was buried by churches and it's people. With in depth interviews and investigation they finds out there could be around 90 such priest in Boston alone who have been molesting as well sexually abusing kids for years. The spotlight  teams (Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) as well few other journalist), prepares a strong story, however Baron still pushes them instead of taking on individual priests they must take it against the entire system where Cardinals & bigger authorities let these abuse happen and don't take any action against such bad as well as corrupt priests. Spotlight team then work out and make a strong story which gets published in early 2002 which gets huge responses and uncovers thousands of such cases across the world.

The movie has a theme of investigation where director Tom McCarthy does a superb job on keeping you engage through out the movie. Having superb cast of Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Stanley Tucci etc there is no doubt all given great performance however Mark Ruffalo stands out with his fierce full acting. It's an amazing movie and chills you by thinking how in the name of god things happens where people at large suffer silently against power of churches. A must watch movie and I won't be surprised if it wins Best Film in Oscar.

Minions - [ Comedy / Animation ] - (3.5/5)

Minions : History Of Finding Great Villain

First it was Puss in the boots, Penguins and now it's Minions a most loved characters from a great movie Despicable Me. Minions is a movie about history of Minions who have only one purpose which is to serve most villainous boss. They successfully finds several bosses  in history from T-Rex Dinosaur, Caveman, Dracula, Pharaoh to Neoploeon and every time they screw up something, so they decided to Isolate them shelves and live the life in Antarctica. The lack of a master drives them into depression, so fearless lead Minion Kevin comes up with a plan to find a new one for his Minion-kind with another rebel Minions Bob and Stuart. The movie is about their plan to discover new boss and mis-adventures when they land after meeting Scarlet (Sandra Bullock).

As usual Minions makes you laugh and rollover with their extra cuteness and funny, however the story lacks it soul which they had in Despicable movies with Gru. Still it is fun to watch for the sake of our fanaticism with Minions.

Jurassic World - [ Action / Adventure ] - (2.5/5)

Jurassic World : Another Dinosaur On The Run

Just like previous Jurassic Park movies, the plot are nearly same. After twenty two years of accident at Jurassic Park, a theme park populated with cloned dinosaurs with more security. To get more funding for the park Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), owner of Jurassic World and Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong), scientist on InGen creates a dinosaur called Indominus Rex, designed by using the DNA of several predatory dinosaurs and modern-day animals. This genetically designed dinosaur is not only is deadliest but also has intelligence to put a trap, kill for fun, communicate with other dinosaur, camouflage etc. With it's intelligence he breaks his cells and on the run by killing every moving things comes in front of him. There are also raptors which was trained by Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) which Vic Hoskins, head of InGen security, believes raptors can be trained for military use, but Owen disagrees.

With Indominus out on open which is threat to thousands of Jurassic World visitors, Owen and Jurassic World Operation Manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) plans to kill Indominus by attacking it with trained Raptors. The movie is about how to finally kill the dinosaur to save humans which is created by humans only and finish it with great special effects & action sequences.
It is one of those movies which you can't avoid but know what to expect out of it. For me it's an average make quite similar to what we expect from our Indian 100 crore plus blockbuster movies. No wonder this movie is highest grossing movie worldwide with same logic.

Dil Dhadakne Do - [ Comedy / Drama ] - (4/5)

Dil Dhadakne Do - A Family High On High Sea

Dil Dhadakne Do is an ensemble family comedy drama directed by Zoya Akhtar. It's a story about a multi-millionaire family of Mehra's who is on the verge of Bankruptcy. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is struggling with his business empire which used to be successful and has troubled relationship with his wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) but pretends to be great couple in the eyes of society. They have two children, one is Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) who is self-made successful business woman but her success was always ignored by her father Kamal Mehra and her husband Manav (Rahul Bose) as they wanted her to do the duties of typical Indian woman and start family. Their another child Kabir (Ranveer Singh) who is expected to take a rein of family business but he has a dream to become pilot.

In order to save their business, Kamal Mehra plans his 30 year anniversary bash in 10 days Cruise in European shores and the entire drama unfolds in that journey which brings this broken family together.

Zoya has unique style of storytelling through ensemble cast in the background of an exotic trip and she has proved her mettle with her third movie which keeps audience interested in the characters she builds in her story. The casting is done in superb way to make it believe story with it’s own shocking values with tinge of humour. As the movie casts best of the actors from the industry however according to me the ones who still stand among them are Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah. Priyanka Chopra carries the emotion of new age successful yet suppressed woman with perfection and Ranveer Singh looks energetic with complete control of his character as young & confused rich boy. The story is funny and will pinch you about the reality as well as illusions in society we live in.

I loved this movie and yes, it was hat-trick for Zoya after Luck By Chance and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara. Go for it.

MAD MAX - FURY ROAD : Noisy Battle

Mad Max is an Australian movie setup in a future dessert wasteland where civilisation is collapsed after a nuclear war. Max (Tom Hardy) is a war survivor, captured by War Boys and used as Blood Bag for sick war boy Nux (Nicholas Hoult). The entire population of survived city Citadel is ruled by ruthless Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) who deprive his people of water & food and have few wives which are termed as breeders. Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is Joe's Imperator drives heavily armored War Rig to collect gasoline and goes off track. Joe's realises his five wives are missing and command his troop to capture Furiosa. Nux in order to get Joe's attention drives to capture her by tying Max in his armored vehicle. Max manages to escape and capture's Furiosa and War Rig and try to escape and in turns helps Furiosa & five wives to go to "Green Place".  The movie is about fully loaded action of the chase and fights between Max and Joe's army.

No doubt movie is full will marvelously done action sequence but I found it an ordinary movie, not much to the hype the way it was released. It has great sounds and stunts. Tom Hardy is tough as Max and the whatever the interesting thing in this movie, it belongs to Charlize Theron.

I know it is getting rave review, but for me it's an average movie and I am still wondering why this movie is termed as Feminist Cult.

Gone Girl : Shocking Reality
Superb, Fantastic, Shocking and Fantastic movie which will last in your mind for quite sometime.

Gone Girl is thriller drama about a couple Nick and Amy played by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike where Amy goes mysteriously missing on her fifth anniversary. Her missing investigation reveals the bad relationships between couple and evidence shows that she has been possibly murdered by Nick. In parallel Nick tries to find her whereabouts through clues she left for anniversary and realises that she has setup the whole thing to make him suspect of her planned murder. The movie goes through very complicated twist and turns any more revelation will be spoiler for those who has not seen it yet.

David Fincher is as usual shows his perfection in movie making and the way story is presented by going back and forth in timelines. As a director he proved he has capability to handle varieties of genres like thriller such as Fight Club, Seven as well as personality based drama like Curious Case of Benjamin Button & The Social Network. He has done superb and deserves an Oscar for this one. The another delight of the movie is Rosamund Pike with her exceptional performance as Amy and yes Ben Affleck adds to the perfection. This movie is unpredictable and make you jaw open out of shock the way it has dealt the relationship and conspiracy behind it.

Indeed this is the best movie of 2014.
